TL:DR: Dog just had 1 year birthday, afraid we're allowing her to be too hyper with toys but don't want her to be bored and unhappy
  • 04
Widget had her 1st birthday this week, the same week we're also dog sitting a 6 year old sister of hers from an earlier litter.
  • 05
Now, Widget is still crazy hyper, absolutely obsessed with fetch/playing goalie, tries to play
  • 06
with our cats, and just runs around going nuts all the time. She's not destructive at all, just very high
  • 07
energy. Her sister however, is a study in contrasts. She's practically a cat in a dog body: very chill, sleeps
  • 08
at your feet, seemingly fine without toys or things for hours at a time.
  • 09
The thing is, this is my first dog in 25 years and I'm not sure if Widget's energy and what seems like a NEED
  • 10
to play fetch constantly is because she's only 1, or because I'm giving her bad habits. She has a toy
  • 11
basically 24/7 (ball, an indestructible asparagus about the shape of a bone to chew on or throw, etc), and
  • 12
since she's not destructive at all we don't try to reign in her energy.
  • 13
Is the energy due to the stimulation of always having a toy or cats around to play with? Obviously we
  • 14
can't remove the cats, but should we be limiting her toy time throughout the day? I'm so worried
  • 15
she'll be bored without it but her sister does just fine so now I'm rethinking that. But again, she's only 1
  • 16
Tbh I'm horrified that the dog we're sitting is going to go back with a new personality that her parents
  • 17
won't love. A little hyper instead of the cat she is now. What should I do?
  • 18
princesscharmingowl Always keep in mind that theyre also not happy if they
  • 19
are hyper all the time. Its stressful to them too if they dont learn to relax :)
